Buffalo
can weigh up to one and half tons, with massive heads, humped shoulders,
and long wooly hair. Buffalo horns extend almost immediately upwards
from the head. This distinguishes them from steer or cow horns, which
grow horizontally for a distance before curving. The correct name
for American buffalo is “bison.” In times past, millions
of them roamed throughout the American plains. Buffalo is considered
sacred to many North American tribes, especially the rare white buffalo
that are occasionally born. It is a symbol of abundance and plenty
that is a gift from Great Spirit. Buffalo medicine also involves prayers
and gratitude for the abundance that is received. Native tribes made
use of every part of the buffalo and wasted nothing – meat for food,
hides for clothing, hooves for glue, and horns and skulls for ceremonial
purposes. Only the number of buffalo needed to sustain the tribe were
taken. The skull in this photo came from a buffalo ranch in Montana.
It hangs above the entry at the "House of the Dancing Sun" (La
Casa del Sol Bilando), a Sedona vacation rental home. It welcomes
you to experience the abundant beauty and special energy of Sedona and the
Turquoise Triangle area.
